Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT)
- CAAT works for the reduction and ultimate abolition of the international arms trade.
- It opposes the UK Trade and Investment Defence and Security Organisation which employs 160 civil servants to promote British arms exports on behalf of private companies. This is greater that the number of civil servants used to support the exports of all the other industries put together. This position is shared by Brentwood CND, the Bishop of Brentwood (RC) and the Bishop of Chelmsford (Anglican). Nationally, the Archbishop of Canterbury and many other church leaders are also opposed to this promotion of the arms industry.
- CAAT conducts its own research into the international arms trade,( including the share holdings of major public bodies) and also uses the findings of Jane’s Defence Weekly and the Oxford Research Group, amongst others, for its campaigning work.
